Commissioner of Sewers

Lytham St. Annes, England: Screen Edge / Klaus Maeck, 1991. First DVD Edition. (Schottlaender F25 B, pg. 128). “Commissioner of Sewers” is a film on the great William S. Burroughs by German filmmaker Klaus Maeck, here appearing in the First DVD Edition, preceded only by a VHS edition of 1989. The film includes footage of WSB’s public readings of “The Western Lands” (New York, NY: Viking Penguin, 1987) & other works, footage of experimental films in which he appears and a selection of his paintings—then a primary mode of composition for Burroughs, as he did not begin painting in earnest until after the 1986 death of his treasured friend-&-coconspirator, Brion Gysin. Perhaps the gem of this documentary is WSB’s extensive interview with the late great German writer, Jurgen Ploog. In it, Burroughs discusses the cut-ups; language as a weapon and other weapons; his theory of the word as virus; the function of dreams; travel in time and space; the ways of living and dying, & more. A rare still-sealed copy, this offering is shrink-wrapped in original packaging, with only slight tear to shrink-wrap at upper left-hand corner of front cover. As New. [Item #4077]
