Origin Fourth Series No. 3 (April 1978)

Kyoto, Japan: Origin Press, 1978. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "I did not/ choose to be/ born and I// do not choose/ to die. I-/ as you are-// am one of/ many who/ have arrived." (Cid Corman ("CC"), "The Elite," pg. 64). The third number in the fourth series of the legendary literary journal edited, published & with contribution by the great expatriate American poet & translator Cid Corman (1924-2004). Subtitled "The old peasant," this later issue begins with three contributions by the acclaimed French poet Andre Du Bouchet (1924-2001) which comprise more than half the contents: The prose fragments "From a notebook," the poem "One Day More," & the suite of 12 poems under the title "Laisses," all in English with no credited translator. Other venerable contributors of single or several poems are Corman (see quote above), Seymour Faust, Denis Goacher, Mark Karlins, Barbara Moraff (who Jack Kerouac nicknamed "The Baby of the Beat Generation" when she first met him at age 18 & is still active), Frank Samperi & the noted Scottish poet Gael Turnbull (1928-2004). A chapbook-format production in stapled wrappers, officially published in Japan where Corman lived most of his life, & printed in India. From the library of Clayton Eshleman (1935-2021), another great American poet & translator who obtained many of his Origin issues from Corman personally & was a contributor to several of them. Eshleman was our friend & mentor here in Michigan, & we grieve his very recent loss. A vintage issue of this eminently collectible series, in very fine condition with only very slight fading mostly at blank margins & edges of front, back covers & stapled spine; a few tiny bumps & short, faint creases at thin edges & corners of same; several very small, shallow, non-penetrating dimple-dents near lower left corner of back cover; mild browning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only small-to-tiny bumps & faint creases to first ten-or-so page leaves; echoes of minor dimple-dents at back cover (noted above) onto blank areas of last few of same. Very Fine. [Item #4170]
