Cherry Valley, NY: Cherry Valley Editions, 1977; 1978; 1979. First Printings. Stapled Wrappers. Four vintage, contiguous numbers of the literary review journal subtitled "A Small Press Review Magazine" co-published & with contributions by Legendary Literary Outlaw Charles Plymell, & chiefly edited by his wife & co-publisher Pamela Beach Plymell, productions of their Cherry Valley Editions imprint: (1) NRS Vol. 2 No. 8 & 9 (1977)- this issue features a lengthy, laudatory article on the works of W.S. Merwin by the prolific poet, playwright & critic Robert Peters (of whom we have many rarities available); reviews of collections by John Bennett & Gerald Locklin by Hugh Fox; an essay on contemporary music by Paul Grillo; a review of a Jack Micheline collection by Michael Scott Cain; a survey of small press numbers by Charles Plymell; another on Janine Pommy Vega by John Escow; & much more including ads for such now-classic CVE publications as Mary Beach's Electric Banana, William S. Burroughs' Cobblestone Gardens & Charles' In Memory of my Father. We provide two copies of this number, identical except for color of covers- one grey, one white. (2) NRS Vol. 2 No.10- Vol. 3 No. 11 (1978)- this issue features a review of a Ward Abbott collection by Douglas Blazek; of WSB's The Retreat Diaries by Jack Grady; of Jack Hirschman by Joe La Rosa; of Anne Waldman by Jack Kimball; of A.D. Winans by Hugh Fox; a Jeremiad against National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) & other establishment grant & award programs by the Plymells (an ongoing theme through these fiercely independent issues that give due to The Prolific & Underappreciated like themselves) & much more including contemporary ads. (3) NRS Vol. 3 No. 12 & 13 (1978)- this issue features small-press-advocating letters to the editor by Winans & others; a "Small Press Scanner" survey by Charles including of a collection by Robert Creeley; a review of a work by Claude Pelieu translated by Mary Beach (Pamela's stepfather & mother respectively) by Jorg Fauser; of a volume of poems by John Clellon Holmes by Richard Ardinger & much more including reproductions of collage artworks on front cover & throughout by Pelieu. (4) NRS Vol. 3 No. 14 (1979)- this issue features a thoughtful essay on the importance & fragility of small presses by Paul McDonough; a bibliography of NEA-related articles compiled by Eric Baizer; an article about the 1978 San Francisco Book Fair by Terrence Ames; a review of Charles' Trashing of America by Brown Miller & more. With contemporary ads including for Charles Henri Ford's Om Krishna, published by CVE. All issues except this are larger magazine-format, this number was produced in a smaller chapbook-style format. Four very important issues of this journal with a mission mostly unfulfilled by others- to shed light on, bring attention to & provide deep commentary about essential & yet often neglected works & their small, independent publishers. All issues in fine-to-very-fine condition with only mild rubbing & creasing to covers & stapled spines; light wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; very fine interiors with only tiny bumps, creases at corners of some page leaves; staples in most issues in process of rusting with minimal bleeding; middle folded leaf of (2) detached from lower of two staples; light browning & spot-staining to several page leaves of same with no effect on text legibility; small amount of bracketing-sidelining marginalia next to review titles in pen or pencil in some issues; White-covered specimen of (1) with several light (coffee?!) stains at blank areas of front cover; (3) & (4) with mailing stickers for The Toothpaste Press (among the small presses that published some of the works reviewed in these issues), vintage stamps, postmarks. Fine- Very Fine. [Item #4223]
