Rhinebeck, NY: Cid Corman / Open Studio, 1977-1982. First Editions. Stapled Wrappers; Softcover. From the Collection of Award-Winning Poet & Translator, Clayton Eshleman. Offered here is a full run of the elusive Fourth Series of Cid Corman’s legendary ORIGIN Magazine, founded in 1951 by Corman at the prodding of Charles Olson and Robert Creeley. Corman, an editorial trendsetter known for his aggressive championing of the poets and writers he published, does not disappoint in the Fourth Series--which spanned a full five years and took longer to publish than any other run of this legendary journal. The Fourth Series is great for deep-divers who are looking to not only probe Corman’s lifelong editorial genius but discover the forgotten gems, the prolific-&-underappreciated geniuses Corman so frequently found and published, who—despite their obvious proficiency—were “…greeted with a loud silence by the publishing world,” to use a phrase of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s. Perhaps the most hilarious anecdote about the Fourth Series comes from Corman protégé Clayton Eshleman (1935-2021), who relayed the following backstory to your devoted Assistant Curator during a visit to his house in 2018. After many years of unrelenting, almost verbally-abusive mentorship from the thorny Corman, Eshleman hatched an idea for a prank that would test his hyper-serious former mentor. He decided to create a sexually-suggestive female alter-ego and submit poems to Origin under her name. His plan worked: he duped Corman into believing he was corresponding with the sultry poetess “Horrah Pornoff.” Corman was so taken with Ms. Pornoff that he dedicated the bulk of the entire Seventh Issue in the Fourth Series to her, even “introducing her” by featuring her name on the cover of that issue. How a genius like Corman fell for such an obvious hoax says more of his lack of competence with the opposite sex than anything else, but remains one of the great literary pranks of all time. We obtained these issues directly from Mr. Eshleman himself in 2018, giving them the distinguished provenance of having not only come from the collection of an Origin Magazine contributor but perhaps Corman's most serious student. Other contributors to this underappreciated series are as follows: (1) Frank Samperi, October 1977; (2) Brian McInerney, January 1978; (3) Andre Du Bouchet, April 1978; (4) Clive Faust, July 1978; (5) Cid Corman, October 1978; (6) Mark Karlins, January 1979; (7) “Horrah Pornoff” / Clayton Eshleman, April 1979; (8) David Miller, July 1979; (9) Michael Heller, October 1979; (10) Philippe Denis, January 1980; (11) John Perlman, April 1980; (12) George Evans, July 1980; (13) Kusano Shimpei, October 1980; (14) Andy Echavarria, January 1981; (15) Armand Schwerner, April 1981; (16) Lorine Niedecker, July 1981; (17) Graham Lindsay, October 1981; (18) Bruce McClelland, January 1982; (19) Ted Pearson, April 1982; (20) Gill Ott and John Levey, July 1982.
