San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1971; 1981. First Edition, Fourth Printing; First Edition Thus. Softcovers. "For a time I held a unique position. Among the hundreds of isolated creatures who haunted the streets of lower downtown Denver, there was not one so young as myself. Amid these dreary men who had committed themselves, each for his own good reason, to the task of finishing their days as pennyless drunkards, I alone as the sharer of their way of life, presented the sole replica of their own childhood to which their vision could daily turn. Being thus grafted onto them, I became the unnatural son of a few score beaten men." (Chapter 1, first paragraph, pg. 1 or 47) For many years, The First Third contained most of the writings ever recovered & published by Neal Cassady (1926-1968), the legendary muse & On-the-Road partner of Jack Kerouac & the key member-bridge between the Beat Generation & the 1960s counterculture as the loquacious driver & co-pilot with Ken Kesey of the Merry Pranksters' "Further" bus. Not until the recovery & publication of the entire "Joan Anderson Letter" of 1950 from Cassady to Kerouac in 2020 (see our Item No. 4259) did all of the text that the main body of The First Third partially presents finally appear. Here are two collectible editions of the volume that, for half a century, was the main testament by this key American Beat-&-Beyond literary & cultural figure: (1) The First Third, trade-format softcover original first published in 1971 by City Lights Books, fourth printing of June 1974 as stated on copyright page. Per Ralph T. Cook's CLB Descriptive Bibliography, the fourth printing was the last to indicate a printing number & to retain the original price of $3 on back cover (No. 93(a), pgs. 98-99). With "The First Third" in three chapters, fragments, & one letter each from Cassady to Kerouac & Kesey. (2) The First Third, "New Expanded Edition (back cover)," trade-format softcover original, first edition thus of 3000 copies printed during December 1981 by CLB with all points in Cook, No. 93(b), pg. 100. This much-expanded & revised edition includes a lengthy Prologue that was re-discovered since the first edition in which Cassady relates his ancestry & family history; an Editor's Note by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), the iconic poet, bookseller & publisher of CLB; & an Afterword by Neal's long-suffering widow Carolyn Cassady. Two rare versions of the Cassady classic, with some of the most significant & influential (albeit fragmentary) documents of the Beat Generation. (1) In very fine condition with only mild rubbing, browning & a few short, faint creases to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; mild rubbing, browning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps esp. to lower corners of page leaves. (2) Fine with mild rubbing, scratching & creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at thin edges & corners of same; several long but faint vertical & angled creases across length of back cover; moderate spotting & light spot-staining to edges of text block esp. upper edge.
