The first two numbers of the deep & varied literary journal subtitled "A Literary Tri-Quarterly of the Whole Art" founded, chiefly edited & with contributions by the great Clayton Eshleman (1935-2021), the award-winning American poet, editor, translator & academician who was our local friend & mentor: (1) Sulfur Vol. 1 No. 1 (1981)- this inaugural issue features contributions of poetry by John Ashbery, Paul Blackburn, Aime Cesaire (translation by Eshleman & Annette Smith), Robert Kelly (also a contributing editor), Ezra Pound, Jerome Rothenberg, Diane Wakoski & others from myriad generations, schools & movements. Also a collection of early letters written between Charles Olson (our favorite poet of Maximus opacity) & Edward Dahlberg during 1936-1948. With reviews, a few contemporary ads. On the title page, just below upper edge, Eshleman has hand-written his signature. (2) Sulfur Vol. 1 No. 2 (1981)- this second issue features contributions of poetry by Theodore Enslin, Rothenberg, Ron Padgett & others; & prose by Eshleman (one of his treatises on Paleolithic cave art, a specialty) & Rothenberg (critical essay on Harold Bloom). Also with the second installment of collected letters between Olson & Dahlberg written during 1949-1950, & from Antonin Artaud to Jean Paulhan (1937); & a portfolio of photographic artworks selected by Darryl V. Curran. With reviews, a few contemporary ads. On the title page, again just below upper edge, Eshleman has hand-written his signature. The first two issues of this most rich & rare journal, signed by its founder & mastermind, our dear departed friend Clayton Eshleman. (1) in fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing & short, mostly faint creases to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; very light browning & sparse spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at upper corners of a few page leaves; light browning at blank margins of a very few of same; former owner's circular embossed stamp near lower right corner of title page. (2) very fine with only very slight rubbing to front, back covers & spine; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; very light rubbing & sparse spotting to edges of text block.
