The Scottish Tartans, With the Badges, Arms, Slogans, etc. of the Clans

Toronto, Ontario, Canada: The Musson Book Company Limited, n/d (circa 1936). Unknown Edition. Hardcover. "The very thought of the tartan is enough to gladden the heart of the Scotsman in a distant land. Be he Highlander or Lowlander, he feels a glow of emotion when he beholds the dress he may have worn when he roamed the lonely glens or climbed the heathery hills of his beloved Scotland. To the Highlander especially, there is no name so dear as that of his clan, no garb so grandly beautiful as that in which his ancestors fought against the invader in the renowned days of old. In fancy he marches under the banner of his chief; the pipes ring out their wild and thrilling music; the old familiar war-cry makes the mountains tremble, and the tartan is perhaps steeped in the blood of the brave." (from Introduction, pg. 4) A small oblong volume with color reproductions of illustrated tartan patterns, Coats of Arms, wearers in full dress with relevant regional backgrounds & capsule historical texts - each glossy page devoted to a particular clan. With an introduction (the first paragraph of which is quoted above) & an "Alphabetical List of Family Names, Showing the Tartans They Are Entitled to Wear." Published in Canada & printed in Great Britain as noted on title page, with no reference to date or authors, although it is mentioned in the introduction that "Much of the information has been culled from many authorities and authors, to all of which we owe our thanks..." (pg. 7). Hardcover in red cloth with black lettering & decorations on front cover, back cover & spine are blank. On blank front paste-down is the ink hand-signature of a previous owner & the date "1936" (actually in quotation marks). This date, & a reference we have seen of this volume with same publisher & place that also notes this same year, lead us to believe that it was published during 1936 or perhaps a different year close to it. We have seen no reference to a dust jacket for this edition, if it was ever issued it is not present here. A beautiful compact collectible production, succinctly informative & of great interest to Scottish or Scottish-heritage devotees. In relatively fine unrestored condition with only mild-to-moderate rubbing, fading & occasional spotting to front, back covers & esp. spine (but with hardly any dulling or loss of front cover letters & decorations); mild wear & fading to edges & esp. corners of same; mild rubbing, browning & spotting to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior very fine with only very slight browning & occasional spotting to non-glossy paste-downs & page leaves (through pg. 24 & rear endpaper); tiny bumps at corners of a few of same; glossy illustrated pages (the majority of the book) with only very slight browning to blank margins of some leaves; short, faint creases & spotting at blank areas of a few of same; former owner's signature & date noted above, small sticker for "Wendell Holmes Ltd./ Books & Stationery/ London..." near upper left & lower right corners respectively of front paste-down. Fine. [Item #4414]
