Evergreen Review Vol. 7 No. 28 (January - February 1963)

New York, NY: Evergreen Review, Inc., 1963. First Printing. Softcover. This vintage number of the legendary literary, cultural & arts journal features two contributions by Antonin Artaud (1896-1948), the path-breaking French dramatist, poet, essayist & actor: Three letters written during the 1920s, '30s & '40s in English translation by Thomas Fitzsimmons; & the short one-act play "Spurt of Blood," translated by none other than the great Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Also in this issue is a fascinating article on the work of iconic American actor Humphrey Bogart by Joe Goldberg, with still images of some of his classic films; a portfolio of photographs by Emil J. Cadoo; an essay on the canonical Jazz musicians Paul Desmond & Gerry Mulligan recording at the studio by Martin Williams; poetry by Anselm Hollo, Andrei Voznesensky & others; an interview with Voznesensky conducted by Elizabeth Sutherland; transcript of a portion of the Boston obscenity trial over Henry Miller's novel Tropic of Cancer (published the previous year by Rosset's fearless Grove Press, of course) & more. With notes on contributors, contemporary ads (including for Grove's Theatre in the Twentieth Century: Playwright, Actor & Critic on the Modern Theatre with contributions by Arthur Miller, Jean-Paul Sartre et al.). Trade-format softcover in sewn binding, complete with subscription promotion including sheet of removable cards. Another rich, varied & rewarding issue in this most collectible series. In near-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, scratching & spot-staining to front, esp. back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; very light rubbing & browning to edges of text block. Interior fine except for light (coffee?!) staining at mostly blank marginal areas of pgs. 103-104, 108-113 (the latter leaves with thin stains at margins of several Bogart film photos, not significantly effecting images); tiny bumps at upper corners of a few page leaves. Near Fine. [Item #4446]
