Chicago Review Vol. 12 No. 3 (Autumn 1958)

Chicago, IL: The University of Chicago, 1958. First Printing. Softcover. This vintage number of the literary & arts journal published by the University of Chicago & chiefly edited by Irving Rosenthal features the second chapter of what would first be fully published the following year to become one of the defining pillar productions of the Beat Generation & Beyond: William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Famously, as we know, this excerpt was so controversial among the academic establishment at UC that the publication of further NL chapters were disallowed, whereupon Rosenthal bravely quit the Review & formed the renegade journal Big Table, the first number of which contained the excerpts that the Review rejected (see our item No.s 1803, 3338). Maynard & Miles, C5, pg. 111; Shoaf, Section III, No. 3, pg. 125; Schottlaender, C5, pg. 29. Also in this issue are other works of prose including by Beat-Zen (usually) poet Philip Whalen; poetry by William Everson a/k/a Brother Antoninus, Paul Carroll & others; book reviews including of Stanislaus Joyce's memoir of his brother James by Hugh Kenner; & two letters by Allen Ginsberg, one dated December 9, 1957 & the other slightly later but undated, to Carroll; & yet more. With notes on contributors, a few contemporary ads mostly relating to the Review & other UC productions. Trade-format softcover in sewn binding. From the collection of Brian Schottlaender, author of "Anything But Routine," the most complete & up-to-date WSB bibliography now in its fourth ever-expanding online edition. We always consult our good friend Brian's ABR for all our WSB-related rarities, as above. An especially rare & consequential issue in this highly collectible series, particularly as regards the WSB legend, & with distinguished provenance. In relatively fine condition with mild rubbing, moderate browning & spotting to esp. front, back covers & spine; very slight wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing, browning & spotting to upper edge of text block; less at side & lower edges of same. Interior very fine with only mild browning & spotting to inner covers, first & last page leaves; small, faint creases & tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of some of same; small stamp with "d/p(?)" inside rectangle at blank area near lower right corner of copyright page (pg. 2) with slight surrounding residue. Fine. [Item #4604]
