New York, NY: Sun, 1977. First Edition. Softcover. "Poor old earth we live off/ nobody here loves you/ but nobody/ not even the boy/ who looks over his/ shoulder to see if/ you curl and fold over/ properly against the/ steel concavity of the/ blades behind the tractor." ("First Georgic," first stanza, pg. 95). A collection with the title poem & others, many theretofore uncollected, by George Economou (1934-2019), the acclaimed Greek-American poet, translator & editor. Economou was the co-founder (along with Robert & Joan Kelly)-editor of the legendary & now very collectible literary journal Trobar (1960-1964, see our item No. 2718). Trade-format softcover original, first edition as stated on copyright page. From the collection of Erin Black Matson, the late artist-poet who, along with her then-husband the acclaimed poet & educator Clive Matson, was a member of the Beat Generation- morphing into the hippie counterculture during the 1960s. The Matsons were at the center of the Lower East Side NYC scene & were protégé-colleagues (in lifestyle as much as literature) of Herbert Huncke, Bonnie Bremser et al. A rare & rewarding Economou collectible with distinguished provenance. Also see our item No.s 3055 & 3101, with contributions by Economou. Erin was a tried-&-true Beat-Bohemian to the end, & the relatively good-to-near-fine condition of this volume befits her long ownership & use of it: mild-to-moderate rubbing, scratching, creasing, spotting & spot-staining to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing & moderate-to-significant spotting, spot-staining to edges of text block. Interior fine with light spotting to blank front inner cover & endpaper; more pronounced at blank area of rear endpaper, blank inner rear cover; very small creases, tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Good- Near Fine. [Item #4733]
