Concierge Confidential

New York, NY: St. Martin's Press, 2011. First Printing. Hardcover. “Concierge Confidential” is an early title from the oeuvre of leading intellectual and cultural commentator, the Ukrainian-born American author, Michael Malice (née Krechmer; b. 1976). Malice’s emergence into the pop-cultural and literary spheres began with 2006’s “Ego & Hubris: The Michael Malice Story,” an entire book about and dedicated to him by Underground Comix legend Harvey Pekar of “American Splendor” fame. After the publication of “Ego & Hubris,” Malice began ghostwriting and co-authoring; first with UFC fighter Matt Hughes (“Made in America: The Most Dominant Champion in UFC History”) followed by this work, 2011’s “Concierge Confidential.” Malice’s co-author for “Concierge Confidential,” Michael Fazio, “…is cofounder of Abigail Michaels Concierge, Manhattan’s premier concierge business, serving a population of more than twenty thousand of New York City’s privileged elite. Cultivating his coveted list of personal contacts began at the start of his career in Los Angeles, where he worked as the harried and neglected personal assistant to a Hollywood talent agent and her roster of famous clients. He parlayed what he learned there into a concierge position at the InterContinental Hotel New York, a hotel chain he still serves.” (from Interior Back Flap). Having been born in the former Soviet Union, Michael Malice is particularly fascinated with totalitarian states and geopolitics, and these experiences and fascinations have greatly informed his recent works. These works, including his sui generis expose-&-history of / satire on North Korea, “Dear Reader: the Unauthorized Autobiography of Kim Jong Il” (North Charleston, SC: Michael Malice, 2014) and his explosive, most-recent work “The New Right: A Journey to the Fringe of American Politics” (New York, NY: St. Martin’s Press, 2019) have made him a highly sought-after cultural commentator, winning him now-celebrated appearances on the major media outlets and podcasts of the day. Malice is also known for his eccentric, trademark heralding of and prescription to Anarchism. His trademark phrase, “…the black flag comes in many colors…” is exemplified by the publication of 2021’s “The Anarchist Handbook,” the Malice-edited “…collection of essays by various anarchists throughout history, including Emma Goldman, Mikhail Bukunin (a rival of Marx who predicated Marxism’s catastrophic failures), Max Stirner, and Murray Rothbard—as well as an essay written by Malice himself).” Early work by Malice has skyrocketed in value and collectability as of late, and this unusually clean copy of “Concierge Confidential” is among those works by Malice whose value is rising as fast as his star.
