Western Writers Series No. 12: Ken Kesey

Boise, ID: Boise State University, 1974. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. As the back covers of Wayne Chatterton & James H. Maguire's "Western Writers Series" pamphlets suggest, "This continuing series, primarily regional in nature, provides brief but authoritative introductions to the lives and works of authors who have written significant literature about the American West. These attractive, uniform pamphlets, none of them longer than fifty pages, will be useful to the general reader as well as to high school and college students." Your Devoted Assistant Curator would add that these pamphlets are useful overviews regardless of one's potential standing as a "general reader" or educational status. This slim pamphlet by Bruce Carnes of Madison College not only provides a concise biographical overview of the many formative stages in Kesey's life and career up to that point, but suggests a few analytical lenses that are of equal use to the dedicated Keseyean and new readers, alike. A few excerpts: "A Westerner, Kesey is heir to a vast tradition of cowboy and frontier-hero literature which makes itself felt in his fictitious characters and in his thematic interests: he is preoccupied with investigating the possibility (if not the necessity) of heroism in the midst of an apocalyptic state of human affairs in this country." An early, useful 'pocket critical biography' of Kesey from 1974. Chapbook-format booklet in stapled wrappers, the first and only printing of this 'appetizer of scholarship.' In very fine condition with only slightest shelf-wear to fine-edges, corners; moderate rusting to staples at exterior, else pristine. Very Fine. [Item #4797]
