ISBN: 0395854040
New York, NY: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2000. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed & dated by Jane Goodall at time of publication. "Africa In My Blood is an extraordinary self-portrait in letters of Jane Goodall's early years, from childhood to the publication of In the Shadow of Man, revealing this remarkable woman more vividly than anything published before, by her or about her...a dramatic, moving, funny, and important book that tells the story of how an English girl who loved animals became one of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century." (from front & back flaps) The first volume of the "Autobiography in Letters" by Jane Goodall (b. 1934), the award-winning, much-honored, iconically famous, popular & prolific British anthropologist, author & film documentary subject. The first, most eventful 32 years of Goodall's life & work are chronicled here in her own words. Edited & with an introduction by Dale Peterson, the acclaimed American natural history author; & with a section of captioned historical photographs. Hardcover in unclipped first-issue dust jacket (with $28 price & "0400" printed on front flap), first edition, first printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. On the title page, above & next to her printed name, Goodall has hand-written her signature & date in bold black ink: "(Signed) Jane Goodall./ 4.5.00." The date (either April 5 or May 4, 2000) is at or extremely close to the time of first publication in April 2000 as stated on flap. From the collection of George V. Buehler (1933-2020), who was a prominent real estate developer & collector in Massachusetts & Arizona. We found & have retained, between rear endpaper & pastedown (with facsimile manuscript letter pages, also on front), two duplicates of a printed-out or copied document relating to Buehler's purchase of this item along with the second volume of Goodall's letters (Beyond Innocence, 2001) during 2017, two sheets folded once horizontally, both in very fine condition. A key collectible in the Goodall canon in its rarest original form, enriched with her contemporary signature & with distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing to edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Dust jacket very fine with only a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of front, back covers, spine & flaps; otherwise also apparently mint. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4924]
