Original Concert Poster: The Electric Flag, The Fugs, Mad River, 13th Floor Elevators (February 2-4, 1968)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1968. First Printing. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing performances by The Electric Flag, The Fugs, Mad River & 13th Floor Elevators during February 2-4, 1968 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the outrageously bold graphics & illustrations reproduced here, with a hand giving the notorious "one finger salute" at lower center. Moscoso's facsimile signature (his last name only) can be seen just above the lower ribbon near lower right edge (see image). According to the Talmudic scholarship we have studied regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is from the first & only printing of what would famously come to be known as "The Finger Poster." King, FD-104-OP-1, pgs. 168-169. The number-code issued by the publisher Family Dog Productions is referred to in King as 104. A very close inspection of that number near lower left corner, while hard to decipher amidst the blaring color & dots, appears to be "1042" (again, see image & try to judge for yourself). While we respect Mr. King's guide as the veritable Bible of psychedelic rock concert posters, we believe the additional number does raise the question of whether a second printing, or perhaps an alternate type-version of a first printing, of this poster was produced, of which this copy could be an example. In any case this is a classic relic of later 1960s San Francisco Psychedelia, from the fallout in the wake of the "Summer of Love." From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a highly respected & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this legendary poster in what King's Bible sayeth is in its one-&-only original form (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, Item No. 5008). In our seasoned estimation, the condition of this poster is fine, indeed mostly very fine, with only a touch of rubbing to printed surface; a few tiny bumps & small, faint creases at/ near edges & corners. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Fine- Very Fine. [Item #5046]
