Bay of Souls

New York, NY: Houghton Mifflin, 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. Robert Stone (August 21, 1937-January 10, 2015) was a writer whose accolades alone are both noteworthy and on a level that most writers only dream of. But to just speak of his critical acclaim doesn't quite do the work justice, that being said, here's some just to name a few: A Houghton Mifflin fellowship and William Faulkner Foundation Award for his first novel, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Book Award, and a Pulitzer Prize in Fiction. It seems that, in life, Stone was a writer who put out work of only the highest literary caliber, and Bay of Souls certainly is no exception. A Kafka-esq exploration of a singular man's mind, and his life as a professor of English who decides to abscond to the Caribbean with a colleague. While there corruption, madness, murder, eroticism, and revolution abound and take our intrepid protagonist on a journey that rivals those of Beowulf, and Achilles. Suffused with his stream of consciousness writing style, alternating between a naturalism and a truly deep and irrevocable Beat attitude and spirit. We have found and retained atop the front-facing endpaper a cut out of a New York Times Book Review for "Bay of Souls" written by Norman Rush, also included with this listing. Hardcover in unclipped jacket: First Printing, as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. Book is in very fine condition with only previous ownership notation to half-title page & minute shelf-wear to fine-edges; dust-jacket in equally very fine condition with only similar faint edge-wear to same.
