Beat Scene No. 80 (Winter 2015)
Coventry, England: Beat Scene Press, 2015. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This number of the magazine-format literary journal devoted to the Beat Generation, published by Kevin Ring in the UK, begins with a remembrance by Susan K. Anderson, former student of Edward ("Ed") Dorn (1929-1999), the renowned & respected poet often associated with the Black Mountain School, about her time spent & lessons learned with this courageous, irreverent icon of alternative American Letters. Following this is a similar elegiac remembrance of John Wieners (1934-2002), another Black Mountain (& San Francisco Renaissance)-related Giant of poetry, by Raymond Foye, which depicts Wieners & Allen Ginsberg not as pious poet-shamans but ordinary people as they meet at a NYC coffee shop in preparation for a Wieners reading. Following that we have editor-publisher Ring deliver an insightful article on Harold Norse (among our favorite authors) and his legendary "Bastard Angels" literary magazine; & a fresh biographical sketch on Richard Brautigan brought to us through an article on Erik Weber's compelling then-just-issued book of Brautigan photographs. Also included is another article on Brautigan by Ring, a fascinating analysis of Jack Kerouac's "Magic Voice" (on the page & recorded) by David Holzer, and other contributions regarding John Clellon Holmes, Michael McClure & Wallace Berman, David Amram & yet more. With, as ever, a robust contemporary review section & many vintage images throughout. Another indispensably rich & rewarding issue in the series that always shines a bright light on its front-cover motto: "This is the Beat Generation." In very fine condition with only a hint of rubbing & a few short, faint creases to front, back covers & stapled spine; a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at upper corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #5100]
