New York, NY: Jerome Rothenberg & Dennis Tedlock; Stony Brook Poetics Foundation, 1970; 1971. First Printings. Softcovers. "As the first magazine of the world's tribal poetries, ALCHERINGA will not be a scholarly "journal of ethnopoetics" so much as a place where tribal poetry can appear in English translation & can act (in the oldest & newest of poetic traditions) to change men's minds & lives. While its sources will be different from other poetry magazines, it will be aiming at the startling & revelatory presentation that has been common to our avant gardes." (from editors' Statement of Intention, pg. 1) The first two issues of the literary journal founded & edited by Jerome Rothenberg (b. 1931), the venerable & prolific American poet who "Almost single-handedly founded the interdisciplinary field of "ethnopoetics"- both as the investigation of poetry across the full range of human cultures and its practice in relation to our own." (front flap, Pre-Faces & Other Writings, 1981, see our item No. 3110). These first two issues are co-edited by Dennis Tedlock (1939-2016), an acclaimed anthropology academician & translator. Among the contributing editors of both issues are Nathaniel Tarn & the primary Beat Generation- San Francisco Renaissance Grand Elder Poet Gary Snyder (still with us & active at age 92 as of this writing!). Large-format softcovers in perfect-bound wrappers with illustrated front covers depicting Native American images. The first issue is complete, including a promotional sheet for the Stony Brook Poetics Foundation & a subscription envelope for Alcheringa & Stony Brook journals, between final leaf & inner front cover. The second issue lacks the flexible phonograph record originally attached at same location as above, & an errata slip we have seen reference to. The rare & fabled first two issues in this most collectible & significant series. See also our item No. 1640 (first two & special issues of Alcheringa's second "New Series") & many other Rothenberg & Rothenberg-contributing items. First issue in fine condition with mild rubbing, browning, faint scratching & sparse spotting to front, back covers & spine; light wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; very light browning, rubbing to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only a touch of browning mostly to blank margins of inner covers & page leaves; tiny bumps & small, faint creases at corners of a few leaves. Second issue good-to-near-fine with mild rubbing, light browning & faint scratching to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; very slight browning & rubbing to edges of text block. Interior good-to-near-fine with first page leaf detached (but intact); rest of leaves in process of detaching from spine but still attached & intact; a hint of browning mostly to blank margins of inner covers & leaves; tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of a few leaves; vertical highlighting lines in blue ink at blank areas just next to left side of (uneffected) texts on four pages (pgs. 66-69).
