San Francisco Review Vol. 1 No. 3

San Francisco, CA: R.H. Miller, 1959. First Printing. Softcover. Despite the fact of its offices having been headquartered mere moments away from City Lights Books, and that its own literary-editorial stock saw itself rise alongside the tsunamic tide of the Beat Generation, -- there's not that many Beats in San Francisco review. They rarely "take over" an issue of this (wildly underappreciated) trade-format literary journal--but, as is so often the case, it's actually a good thing. Editorial autonomy (here defined as 'a final fidelity to one's own tastes above the 'advice' or insistence of others) characterizes issues of the San Francisco Review like this one. All that talent and visionary fervor right down the street, and--while we'll include some of what's happening there, to be sure--we've got other things we think are better. It's fitting, then that there's a lot of "Beyond" beside the quotient of "Beat" that comprises this magazine. When it comes to the Beats, the only explicitly related member-figures of the Beat Generation found between these age-toned, lime green covers are Lew Welch ("Barbara/Van Gogh Poem") and William J. Margolis, co-founder of "Beatitude Magazine" with Bob Kaufman ("Portrait of the Outsider as a Young Bird"). Most excitingly for the world-weary intellectuals who almost certainly comprise a husky portion of our customer base is the presence of celebrated Existentialist, Albert Camus, who contributes "Communion at Tipasa," (which is quite the deep-cut, let us tell you). For a full contributor list, see the images accompanying this listing. Trade softcover format literary journal: the first and only printing of this ground-floor relic from the first San Francisco Renaissance. In strong near fine condition with only minor-to-moderate shelf-wear, bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back cover & spine; a few instances of light-to-moderate rubbing & tiny exhibits of chipping near fine-edges of same; small bump-crease to bottom-right hand corner of front cover. Near Fine. [Item #5245]
