Original Concert Poster: Mothers, Oxford Circle (September 9-10, 1966)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1966. First Printing. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing performances presented by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991), headlined by the Mothers (that is, Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention), along with Oxford Circle, during September 9-10, 1966 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. The great American poster artist, designer, author & all-around polymath John H. Myers created the graphics & illustrations reproduced here, & "John H. Myers- '66" in facsimile handwriting & numbering is found just below purple line-border near lower right corner (see image). According to the Talmudic scholarship we have studied regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is a first printing, with "(union logo)-221" printed below border near lower left corner. King, BG-27-OP-1, pg. 343. King notes: "This poster is dark blue/purple and orange on a white background. The central image is an uncredited photograph of the Mothers. This is one of several Fillmore posters by John H. Myers." (pg. 343) Interestingly, there is this statement near bottom of image: "Notice!/ Out of respect for the religious services/ in the temple next to the Fillmore/ Auditorium, Saturday night's dance/ will be held at the/ Scottish Rights/ Temple." An exemplary relic of the psychedelic era that would come to full bloom the following year during the "Summer of Love" in its rarest original form; among the earliest appearances of Zappa & Co. of great interest to such devoted fans as this writer! From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a most respected & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a fabled time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our eagle-eyed & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only mild rubbing, browning at blank white margins/edges (bordered image bright & substantially mint); a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5286]
