Prose [Out] Takes

Berkeley, CA: Poltroon Press, 2002. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "Secrets of the inner mind, the hidden heart, compulsions and obsessions ... to step/ across the shadows of small trees at night" ("21:v:59," first sentence/stanza, unpaginated) A collection of prose-poetic fragments, untitled but dated between 1958-1963, by Philip Whalen (1923-2002), the great American Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance poet & Zen Buddhist monk. Oblong chapbook in stapled wrappers, one of 260 un-numbered copies produced during August of 2002 by the venerable Poltroon Press, per (rather whimsical) colophon. Whalen died on June 26, 2002, & so this production, copyrighted to "the Estate of Philip Whalen," is among the first, if not as likely the very first, posthumous release of his theretofore unpublished writings. From the collection of Kevin Ring, editor-publisher of Beat Scene magazine & other indispensable productions (many available here), & our good friend in the UK. A beautiful little production; & an extremely rare Whalen collectible, with distinguished provenance. See also our many other Whalen-related items & contributions. In very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing to front, back covers & stapled spine; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #5318]
