The Massachusetts Review Vol. XXXIX No. 2 (Summer 1998)

Amherst, MA: The Massachusetts Review, Inc., 1998. First Printing. Softcover. This number of the venerable academic-literary journal chiefly edited by Ellen Dore Watson is sub-titled "A Tribute to Allen Ginsberg and American Poetry." Published the year following Ginsberg's death, this very special issue features many contributions by & about the Founding Father of the Beat Generation-&-Beyond, including an article on Ginsberg's famous "King of May" episode in Prague during 1965 by Andrew Lass; an interview with Ginsberg conducted by Lass in 1986; the 1965 poem "Kral Majales" (i.e. "King of May") by Ginsberg & much more. Also in this issue are poems by Bill Berkson, Richard Frost, Louis Ginsberg (Allen's father), Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Janet Kaplan, Eileen Myles & many others (many of course relating to Ginsberg); essays including "Democracy and the Poet: Walt Whitman and E.A. Robinson" by Alan Trachtenberg; a portfolio of captioned historic photographs depicting Ginsberg in Prague; notes on contributors & a few contemporary ads. Trade-format softcover in perfect binding. From the collection of Allen Tobias, assistant to Ginsberg beginning in the 1960s, curator, critical writer & Man of Letters- as well as our good friend & esteemed colleague at the European Beat Studies Network (ebsn.eu). A particularly rare issue in this collectible series, of utmost interest to Ginsberg devotees & with very relevant, distinguished provenance. In relatively near-fine-verging-on-fine condition with light rubbing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear, some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; one very short, closed vertical tear at/near middle blank-border upper edge of front cover (not effecting image of Ginsberg with James Baldwin); mild rubbing, occasional spotting to edges of text block. Interior fine with marginalia in light pencil by Tobias at front endpaper (title & first index page), removable if desired (but we think intriguing); small, faint creases & tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Near Fine- Fine. [Item #5324]
