Original Concert Poster: Bola Sete, Country Joe & the Fish, Buffalo Springfield (November 11-13, 1966)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1966. First Printing. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 13&7/8" x 24&1/2") announcing performances presented by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991), headlined by Bola Sete (1923-1987, the noted Brazilian jazz guitarist), along with Country Joe & the Fish & Buffalo Springfield, during November 11-13, 1966 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. The acclaimed American artist Wes Wilson (1937-2020) created the graphics & illustrations reproduced here, & "(c) 1966 Wes Wilson #20" in facsimile hand-lettering, numbering & symbol is found just inside lower right edge next to "F" in "Fillmore" (see image). According to the Talmudic scholarship we have studied regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is an original first printing, with "...substantial ink on the reverse side (exclusive to the first printing)...This is not due to ink bleeding through the paper from the front but to slightly moist ink from one poster front coming in contact with the rear of the next poster as it comes off the press. This characteristic of ink on the reverse is not a reliable defining quality on any other poster in this (BG i.e. Bill Graham) series and should only be considered with (this poster)." (see image of verso) King, BG-36-OP-1, pg. 361. King also notes that the "#20" reference printed as part of the Wilson credit noted above is "...part of an earlier numbering system which was discarded" (pg. 361); & that "The central image is a woman shown from the chest up. This is the first of quite a few Bill Graham images where the human figure is extending an arm toward the viewer. All three colors (purple, green & pink) vary substantially from lighter to darker on the original printing..." (pgs. 362-363). A most iconic example of the early psychedelic style that would come to full fruition the following year during the "Summer of Love," in its very rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a highly regarded & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other beautiful posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our seasoned & steady estimation, this poster is in relatively good condition with just a touch of rubbing to otherwise bright & near-mint surface; light wear & some tiny bumps, creases at side & lower edges; several medium-sized angled-horizontal creases at lower right edge-margin at (but not substantially effecting) ticket outlet information; substantial wear incl. short, mostly closed tears & loss of paper at upper edge/corners, heavily effecting "Presented in San Francisco by Bill Graham" at same (but all rest of image almost completely unaffected except for a tiny portion of "o" in "Bola"). This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Good. [Item #5347]
