Glimpses of the 1930s

n/p (Ann Arbor, MI): Jeffrey R. Parsons, 2019. First Edition. Hardcover. "As a child in the later 1940s and early 1950s, I often looked at the hundreds of old photographs that my parents had accumulated in albums and cardboard boxes stashed on shelves and in cupboards around our home. These images from the years well before my birth showed my mother and father, and their relatives and friends and bystanders, during the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s. They were interesting to me, depicting as they did people and places and things in times that seemed remote and exotic." (from "Introduction and Acknowledgments," pg. 1) a collection of reproductions of vintage photographs taken during the later 1920s through the 1930s by Merton S. Parsons (1907-1982) & his wife Elisabeth Oldenburg Parsons (1911-2005), assembled & edited by their son, the late Jeffrey R. Parsons. The chapters, with editor's preface & captioned images, show people & scenes in Maine from 1928-1934 (concluding with the fabled 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair); New York State from 1926-1940; Montana from 1937; & Georgia & Florida from 1937. The images are exemplary of these times & places that do indeed seem more "remote and exotic" than ever from our contemporary perspective. A beautiful production, large hardcover in glossy illustrated boards without dust jacket as issued; with very high-quality reproductions of these precious images that are windows onto a vanished (or drastically changed) world. A most rich & rewarding collectible compilation. In very fine, virtually as-new condition with only a touch of rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & spine; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #5420]
