Privileged Moments: Encounters with Writers

Madison, WI: The University of Wisconsin Press, 2000. First Edition. Hardcover. The ninth volume in University of Wisconsin Press’ “Privileged Moments: Encounters with Writers” series, Jeffrey Meyers’ contribution to the critically acclaimed serial ripely and rightfully embodies the “Beat-&-Beyond” motto we have here at Third Mind Books. Its inaugural chapter, in fact, provides one such example: the great Beat poet Allen Ginsberg is profiled alongside the rough-&-tumble novelist, James Dickey (best known as the author of “Deliverance,” a life-loathing masterpiece on the page & screen, both). We are privy to backstage, behind-the-scenes moments shared between Meyers, Dickey, and Ginsberg, and are treated to Meyers’ reflections therefrom. This is the mode (generally speaking) in which the entire book proceeds. The only difference is the authors profiled, and where their personalities make him (Meyers) take the prose. The anecdotes are rich and insight-birthing; the kind of thing that makes you want to stop reading and start writing a critical essay on. All in all, yet another classic addition to the candor-flecked “Privileged Moments” series. Table of contents, in full, reads as follows: [1] “Allen Ginsberg and James Dickey”; [2] “Ed Dorn at Colorado”; [3] “Arthur Miller”; [4] “Iris Murdoch”; [5] “V.S. Naipaul”; [6] “Francis King”; [7] “J.F. Powers.” [ISBN: 0-299-16940-5].
