Original Concert Poster: Butterfield Blues Band, Charles Lloyd Quartet (January 20-22, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14&3/4" x 21&7/8") announcing performances "Presented in Dance Concert" by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991), headlined by the Butterfield Blues Band, along with the Charles Lloyd Quartet, during January 20-22, 1967 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. The acclaimed American artist Wes Wilson (1937-2020) created the graphics & illustrations reproduced here, & "(c) Wes Wilson/Bill Graham 1967 (three dots in triangle) 46" in facsimile hand-lettering, numbering & symbols is found just inside border of image at lower right corner, parallel with & between right side margin, "E" in "Fillmore" & "M" in "Auditorium" (see image). According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is a first-&-only official printing, first state, with lighter gold circles at lower left & darker gold lettering throughout. King, BG-46-OP-1, pg. 380. King's comments on this poster are more brief than usual, but we note that the reproduced photograph of the Butterfield Blues Band, framed in lighter gold at upper area of image, may be the work of Herb Greene (b. 1942), among the foremost photographers for posters, magazines & album covers of this era- although it is not credited at the image or per King. See esp. item No. 5246, Jefferson Airplane et al., another Graham production dated close to this (August 1966) & with photographic images credited to Greene. Another beautiful exemplar of the early psychedelic style that would come to full fruition later that year during the "Summer of Love," in its rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a highly respected & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's Memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our w(e)arily sharp & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively near-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, scratching & creasing incl. slight loss of dark surface paper at blank side margins/edges, (much less so at) printed lower margin/edge; very slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; one very small area at blank lower right corner with paper loss (central image is bright & substantially all-but-mint). This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Near Fine. [Item #5487]
