Original Concert Poster: Butterfield Blues Band, Charles Lloyd Quartet (January 27-29, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14&3/8" x 22&7/8") announcing a concert by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991), headlined by the (Paul) Butterfield Blues Band, along with the Charles Lloyd Quartet, during January 27-28, 1967 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. There is also, below the band names & above the image of Lloyd, the statement: "Also on Jan(uary) 29 our Reg(ular)/ Sun(day) Afternoon Dance/ Concert $2 Kiddies Free!" We believe this third performance featured the Butterfield & Lloyd bands, but are not certain- this may have been an ongoing child-friendly presentation with special performers concocted by Graham. The acclaimed American artist Wes Wilson (1937-2020) created the graphics & illustrations reproduced here, & "Wes Wilson '67" in facsimile hand-lettering & numbering is found just outside red right background near right (left) shoulder/ upper arm of Lloyd image, parallel with right side edge (see image). According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is an original first-&-only printing. King, BG-47-OP-1, pg. 381. King has uncharacteristically little to say about this poster, but we find it quite bold, electrifying & exemplary; a delightful production in the earlier psychedelic style that would soon come to full flower-power later that year during the "Summer of Love," in its rarest (& only) contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a most respected & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other riveting posters that symbolize a fabled time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our sharp-eyed (if slightly dizzied) & experienced estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only a touch of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; one very short, closed vertical tear at mid-left upper edge; very slight loss of brown surface paper at (slightly curved as issued) lower corners. Entire image incl. backgrounds, graphics & letters is bright & effectively mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5507]
