London, England: Allen & Co., 1983. First UK Edition. Hardcover. “In the silence of night I have often wished for just a few words of love from one man, rather than the applause of thousands of people.” - Judy Garland (June 10, 1922–June 22, 1969). Perhaps best known as Dorothy in 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz”, Garland had a career that started in Vaudeville, moved to the silver screen, and is defined by Oscar nominations, multiple Grammy awards, and a record breaking variety series “The Judy Garland Show”. This particular volume details the relationship between pianist and author, John Meyer, who was a young 28 when he met illustrious and beloved actress and singer Judy Garland (then 46) in ‘68. Late into her career Garland was broke, struggling with addiction, and the turmoil of finding one's way through the miasma of the film industry when her and Meyer started dating. After breaking up with Meyer, due to his inability to follow her on a tour through London while sick, Garland got back with long time on-again-off-again boyfriend Mickey Deans. The two married in ‘69, and Deans unfortunately discovered Garland dead of a barbiturate overdose in their rental home a few months later. Meyer gives us a view of Garland that otherwise has not been seen, separated from her persona as an actor and laid bare as the person she was. Although their time together was short, Meyer got an intimate look into the life of the beloved actress. “Heartbreaker” is a deep exploration of this time spent together and a microscopic look into the last few months of Garland’s life.
