Peace in the House: Tales from a Yiddish Kitchen

Boston, MA: David R. Godine, 2002. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed & Inscribed by Faye Moskowitz. “Displaced and often confused, growing up in families still clinging to the traditions of the old country, these poignant tales feature protagonists still actually speaking Yiddish, mameh loshen, the mother tongue” (from front flap). Retired professor and author of A Leak in the Heart (see our item #5494), Faye Moskowitz (b. 1930) has aimed to keep the Yiddish language and Jewish culture alive in literature as it fades with the assimilation of younger generations of writers into Western culture. A fellow Michigander, Moskowitz was born in Detroit at the start of the Great Depression, and she was raised in Jackson, MI, not far from us here in Ann Arbor. As an English professor of Creative Writing and Judaic Studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Moskowitz fostered an appreciation for Jewish Literature among the younger generations after she noticed the fading of Jewish culture in recent literature of Jewish writers. In this collection, readers join Moskowitz on her journey of self-discovery as she matures to appreciate her Jewish identity through the many tribulations of her experience. [1-56792-219-8]. Inscribed, signed, and dated by Faye Moskowitz on front endpaper in thin blue ink and signed again beneath printed author name on title page. Inscription reads, “With Every Good Wish / Faye Moskowitz / November 8, 2002.” Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket: First Edition, as stated on copyright page, First Printing, though not explicated as such thereon.
