Cleveland, OH: Steven Osterlund & Charles Newland, 1966. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "i came, stood at the door. / you were crying, and could not explain. / my hands became undone, flew out the window. / you huddled, curled in the center / of the bed; your face / red and ugly. / i loved you. / i wanted to lift you / and carry you deep into my heart / where you would be safe / and could sleep, like any child. / but my hands were flapping / a crooked song with the mongrel / blue-jays. i wanted / to explain! / you cried; / i could not explain" (Charles Newland, "For a Lack of Explanations, pg. 4). "10 x 2" by Cleveland, Ohio's Steven Osterlund & Charles Newland can be rightly understood as a flower of d.a.levy's "Cleveland Scene," -- the Cleveland, OH-based outpost of the Mimeograph Revolution started by the mythic, enigmatic levy and key associates like Kent Taylor and Jim Lowell, founder of the Asphodel Bookstore and the man who introduced levy & Lowell. As is well document in the Bottom Dog Press publication, "d.a.levy and the Mimeograph Revolution," levy inspired a groundswell of young people to pursue the art of poetry (most of them teenagers or in their early twenties). Osterlund & Newland's "10 by 2" is thus the perfect, exemplary realization of this aim -- a precocious, self-published & self-produced (a la levy & environs) book of poetry. Per colophon: "10 by 2 / Privately printed / in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. / February 23, 1966 / by Steven Osterlund / and Charles Newland. / This edition is limited / to 50 copies / of which / this is No. 31 [hand-numbered in thin, black pen ink]." Softcover in stapled wrappers: the first (and likely only) printing of this two-man anthology of poems. In very fine condition with only slightest shelf-wear & light rubbing to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers, else pristine. Very Fine. [Item #5631]
