Original Concert Poster: Moby Grape, Chambers Brothers, Charlatans (March 24-26, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 13&3/4" x 21") announcing a concert produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991), with performances headlined by Moby Grape, along with the Chambers Brothers & the Charlatans, in San Francisco during March 24-25, 1967 at Winterland; & March 26, 1967 at the Fillmore Auditorium. The acclaimed American artist Wes Wilson (1937-2020) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Wes Wilson (c) 1967 by Bill Graham (three dots forming triangle) 56 (") West Coast Lithograph Co. (") S.F." in facsimile hand-lettering & numbering is found just inside the lowest, jaw portion of the face-figure, above "Bill Graham Presents in San Francisco," near lower right margin-edge & corner (see image). According to the Talmudic scholarship which we have consulted regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is from the first-&-only printing. King, BG-56-OP-1, pg. 392. King writes: "Since the hippies were fascinated by things to do with Native Americans, it is no surprise that the psychedelic artists often employed Native American imagery. The bold and striking nature of Native American imagery from the Northwest was readily adaptable to psychedelic interpretation as Wes Wilson did here with this face mask." (pg. 393) An electrifying exemplar of Wilson's maturing style as this critical year galloped toward its apex during the "Summer of Love" a few months later, in its rarest & singular contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), an acclaimed & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a fabled time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our sharp & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only a series of small, mostly faint creases at/near lower right edge/corner with very slight loss of surface paper at blank border area near corner (entire central image appears bright & substantially mint); a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at other edges & corners. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5666]
