The Scholastic Vol. 12 No. 8 (May 12, 1928)

Pittsburgh, PA: Scholastic Publishing Company, 1928. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. Maurice R. Robinson (1896-1982) head Editor, and President of “The Western Pennsylvania Scholastic” founded and published the first issue of the magazine on October 22, 1920. The four-page first edition grew to cover high school sports and activities for 50 Pennsylvania high schools. Within two years, the publication became a 24-page national biweekly, “The Scholastic," covering national and world affairs, sports, literature, and the arts. Scholastic's original office was the sewing room on the second floor of M.R. Robinson’s parents’ home in Wilkinsburg, PA, five miles outside Pittsburgh. In 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were founded in connection with “The Scholastic” magazine. While the program began as an opportunity for young writers, it expanded in 1927 to also recognize teen artists. Famous alumni of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards include Truman Capote (1924–1984), Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath (1932–1963), Robert Redford, Ken Burns, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, John Updike (1932–2009), Mozelle Thompson, Zac Posen, and Andy Warhol (1928–1987). This particular volume, “The Scholastic: Volume 12, No. 8 (May 12, 1928)” is a collection of writings from both professional writers such as Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto (1874–1950), and William Lyon Phelps (1865–1943), and a number of young student writers across the United States. Some of the articles included are: “Japanese Love Stories” by Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto, “Daughter Of A Samurai” by Gladys Schmitt, “Is There An Easy Way To Write?” by Homer Croy (1883–1965), and “American Negro Spirituals” by Virginia Ruffin, there even seems to be an ad of Babe Ruth hawking a signature baseball mitt, and a review of a Harold Lloyd film. The front cover features an art piece titled “Athletic Victory Celebration At The Soldiers’ Monument” by John Waltz of Shortridge High School, Indianapolis, Indiana. The back cover also prominently displays a feature for The University Of Pittsburgh, with a small picture of the university’s famous “Cathedral Of Learning” on the left-hand side, and a list of “Schools and Divisions” on the right. Magazine in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing. The magazine is in good-to-near-fine condition with some moderate staining and smudging to front and back covers, light tearing at fine edges, and some separation and tearing at the spine; considering this particular item is now 96 years old (at the time of this particular curation, 2023), its condition is impressive. Fine. [Item #5698]
