Original Event Poster: "Spring Mobilization/ Clean-In/ Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood" (Spring 1967)
San Francisco, CA: Neon Rose, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. An oblong poster (appx. 20" x 14") announcing a "Spring Mobilization/ Clean-In" of the fabled Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco during the spring of 1967. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Moscoso" in facsimile yellow cursive handwriting is found inside lower orange outermost border at middle, just below green outer border of image (see our image). According to Eric King's commentary, Neon Rose was the name given by Moscoso to a special series of posters, including this, that he produced per an arrangement with the Matrix Club on Fillmore Street in San Francisco. (pg. 799) King's Talmudic scholarship regarding this poster indicates that it is most probably the second of two printings of this poster that were made prior to the event, with absence (to our eyes, anyway) of "...a 1/8" oval bluish green print flaw in the lower, white margin one inch to the right of "E" in "((c) 1967 NEON)ROSE." (pg. 808, again see our image). There are other Talmudic points between the two printings in King's entry, especially regarding gradations of color which can only be determined by comparison, which we are unable to do as we only have this copy. In any case, this is an exuberant exemplar of Moscoso's psychedelic style; & an iconic production calling on all Hippies to spring-clean the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood in time for the "Summer of Love" just months or weeks away, in one of its original pre-event forms. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a highly respected artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other riveting posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our sharp-(if sore-)eyed & experienced estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at/near edges & corners; one small, light spot-stain near upper right edge/corner beginning at outermost orange border through green & white image borders & just onto white top of rightmost paisley-esque illustration (yet again see our image, other than the above, entire image appears bright & substantially mint). This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5726]
