London, England: The Tangerine Press, 2023. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Lettered and signed by Billy Childish. “One of the most outstanding, and often misunderstood, figures on the British art scene," according to Peter Doig, author of the introduction to Neal Brown’s Billy Childish: A Short Study (2008), English painter, author, poet, photographer, film maker, singer and guitarist Billy Childish (b. 1959) is best known as a major influence in the underground music, poetry, and art scenes of England in the 70s and 80s. As an experimental musician, Childish has been part of several bands performing genres from garage rock and punk to folk and nursery rhymes. His poetry led him to found The Medway Poets in 1979, and the group focused on performative poetry through the 80s. The group then became the framework for the first Stuckists Art Group when Childish and Charles Thomson founded the Stuckism movement in 1999, which promoted figurative painting over conceptual art forms. Always experimenting with new mediums and artforms and never seeking approval or acceptance by the mainstream art world, Childish went on to then create the British Art Resistance in 2008. The Carl Freedman Gallery of Margate in Kent, England, held an exhibition of Childish’s artwork, mostly oil and charcoal paintings on linen showing human figures, animals, still-lifes and landscapes. This Limited Edition printing of Looking at Paintings was printed and published on the occasion of the exhibition which began on the 2nd of July and concluded the 3rd of September, 2023.
