ISBN: 0914728059
Los Angeles & Berkeley, CA; West Newbury, MA: Black Sparrow Press; frontier Press; Wingbow Press, 1968; 1969; 1972; 1975. First Editions; First Softcover Edition. Stapled Wrappers; Softcovers. Book I signed by Edward Dorn & Allen DeLoach; Book II signed & inscribed by Dorn to DeLoach & signed by DeLoach; Book III inscribed & signed to Dorn by DeLoach; compilation signed by Robin Eichele. "I met in mesilla/ The Cautious Gunslinger/ of impeccable personal smoothness/ and slender leather encased hands/ folded casually/ to make his knock./ He would show you his map." (Book I, "The curtain might rise/ anywhere on a single speaker," pg. 1) Gunslinger is the Magnum Opus of Edward Dorn (1929-1999), among the greatest of the Black Mountain School poets along with his contemporaries/mentors Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan & Charles Olson. We proudly offer the first three parts of this epic masterpiece in their original forms, along with the first softcover edition of the entire four-part poem; all with very special associations/provenances & from the collection of Robin Eichele (b. 1941), a venerable & prominent poet in his own right who was a founding member of the legendary Detroit Artists' Workshop in 1964 along with his colleague John Sinclair (b. 1941), the acclaimed poet, critic & activist: (1) Gunslinger, Book I, trade-format softcover published by Black Sparrow Press in an edition of 600 un-numbered copies (of a total edition of 726 copies per colophon) during April, 1968. On front endpaper/ shorter title page, Dorn has hand-signed & written in black ink: "(Signed) Edward Dorn/ Buffalo 1970." at upper right margin of the same page is the owner's signature of "Allen DeLoach," the well-known (to us Third Minds at least...) Beat-related literary figure who edited & published the Intrepid journal series in the 1960s, which featured contributions by William S. Burroughs & many other key Beat-&-Beyond poets & writers, in bold blue-green ink. (2) Gunslinger Book II, trade-format softcover published by BSP in an edition of 1000 un-numbered copies (of a total edition of 1276 per colophon) during June 1969. On the shorter title page (which follows title page & precedes the poem), Dorn has hand-written & signed in black ink: "For A DeL-/ (signed) Edward Dorn/ Buffalo NY/ Oct(ober) 2(?)0/ 1970." "A DeL" is of course Allen DeLoach, whose ownership signature in bold black ink is found at blank brown front endpaper near upper right corner. (3) Gunslinger Book III: The Winterbook, Prologue to the Great Book IIII Kornerstone, large chapbook-format booklet in stapled illustrated wrappers published by the Frontier Press during 1972, presumed first edition/ first printing with no references to further editions or printings at title or copyright pages. On the title page, DeLoach has hand-written & signed in bold black ink: "For Edward Dorn/ Gracious(?)/ (signed) Allen DeLoach/ Grand(ville?) Mich(igan). June/ 1973." And so, this latter volume is a presentation copy from DeLoach to its author Dorn. (4) Gunslinger (Books I-IIII), trade-format softcover, first edition of 4500 un-numbered softcover copies (of a total edition of 5000 per copyright page) published by Wingbow Press during 1975. On the blank white front endpaper is the ownership signature of Eichele in bold blue ink with underline. A uniquely collectible gathering of Gunslinger, "...a fundamental American masterpiece" (Thomas McGuane, quoted on (4) back cover), with exponentially rich associations, signatures & inscriptions dated close to times of publications. All four components of this collection are in relatively quite fine condition: (1) with mild rubbing, browning, fading & light spotting/spot-staining to front, back covers & spine; a touch of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; mild rubbing, browning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only a hint of browning to blank inner covers & page leaves, the latter mostly at blank margins/edges; tiny bumps at corners of a few leaves. (2) with very light rubbing to front, back covers & esp. spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at upper & lower edges & corners of same (side-edges, corners untrimmed as issued); mild rubbing, browning & occasional light spotting, spot-staining to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only a bit of browning mostly to blank margins/edges of page leaves; miniscule bumps at corners of a few of same. (3) with light rubbing, browning & faint scratching, creasing to front, back covers & stapled spine; very light wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; mild rubbing, browning & occasional spotting to edges of text block; staples in process of rusting with minimal interior & exterior bleeding. Interior fine-to-very-fine with light browning to blank inner covers & page leaves (the latter mostly at blank margins/edges); tiny bumps & small, faint creases at/near corners of some leaves. (4) with mild rubbing, browning, faint scratching, creasing & occasional light spot-staining to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; mild rubbing, browning, occasional faint scratching to edges of text block; one very small, light blue spot-stain at lower edge of same near side-edge; another even smaller at upper side edge from top edge of same; one thin, faint crease across length of spine. Interior very fine with only very slight browning to blank inner covers & page leaves (the latter mostly at blank margins/edges); tiny bumps at corners of a few leaves.
