Original Concert Poster: Moby Grape, Canned Heat, Vanilla Fudge (August 10-13, 1967)
San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing a series of performances during August 10-13, 1967 headlined by Moby Grape (August 10,13), along with Canned Heat (August 11-12) & Vanilla Fudge (August 10-13) at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Moscoso" in gold-colored facsimile cursive handwriting is found just below outermost gold border of image near lower right corner (see image). Credited for "Lights" is "North American Ibis" (abbreviation of "North American Ibis Alchemical Company"), a memorably-named incarnation of Roger Hillyard, Ben van Meter & their associates. Hillyard (b. 1942) was highly involved with the exemplary psychedelic light shows of this era, later became the proprietor of a popular coffee shop, & most recently the practicing resident of a Zen Buddhist center- all in San Francisco. Van Meter (b. 1941) was also a major light show producer & experimental filmmaker at this time, & still engages in cutting-edge creativity as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster, this copy is a first printing, with a pure light-blue color as opposed to "...a very pale, often gray-blue..." color. King, FD-75-OP-1, pg. 141. King writes: "The central image is a collage one element of which is three women wearing bikini bathing suits. The one in the middle appears to have wings attached to her back. A hand above her appears to (be) holding the wings." (pg. 141) Thus does King entitle this poster "Three Bares." A joyful exemplar of the high Moscoso style (including the mind-boggling lettering that can appear as indecipherable hieroglyphics) as it peaked during the "Summer of Love," in its rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a well-respected artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other astonishing posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our sharp-eyed & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively (indeed particularly) very fine condition with only a touch of wear, rubbing & a few tiny bumps, faint creases at thin edges & corners, one miniscule white spot near lower right corner at blue background below address (quite possibly a flaw as issued). The entire recto image appears completely bright & substantially mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5867]
