Original Concert Poster: Charles Lloyd Quartet, West Coast Natural Gas Co. (August 3-6, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing a "Dance Concert" series featuring performances headlined by the Charles Lloyd Quartet, along with the West Coast Natural Gas Co., during August 3-6, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The artwork & graphics reproduced here were created by Robert Fried (1937-1975), among the great American San Francisco-based artists along with Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso (who were his friends) et al; & "Fried 621-1944" in facsimile cursive hand-lettering & numbering is found just outside the lower blue outer right side border of image near right corner (see image). Credited for "Lights" is "The North American Ibis Alchemical Company," a memorably named incarnation of Roger Hillyard, Ben van Meter & their associates. Hillyard (b. 1942) was highly involved with the exemplary psychedelic light shows of this era, later became the proprietor of a popular coffee shop, & most recently the practicing resident of a Zen Buddhist center- all in San Francisco. Van Meter (b. 1941) was also a major light show producer & experimental filmmaker at this time, & still engages in cutting-edge creativity as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster, it is a first printing, with silver-colored background dots & lettering that flanks either side of the Family Dog Native American logo figure within the image (rather than white-colored in the second printing). King, FD-74-OP-1, pg. 140. King writes: "The central image is the Native American from the Family Dog logo standing in front of the Taj Mahal. He is holding a viola. When this poster was reprinted, the silver was eliminated." (pg. 141) Thus does King entitle this poster "Tripping or Taj Mahal." An unforgettable psychedelic Fried masterpiece from the later height of the "Summer of Love" in its rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), an acclaimed artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a legendary time & place. In our sharp & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only a hint of wear & a few tiny bumps, faint creases at edges & corners- the entire recto image is completely bright & substantially mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5886]
