Leiden, The Neitherlands: Koninklijke Brill, 2021. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed and signed by Jonathan Gross. “Graffiti is beautiful; like a brick in the face of a cop.”--Hunter S. Thompson. Jonathan Gross, professor, author, writer, and our friend presents for us his book Words of The Prophets, an exploration of graffiti as not just art, but as distinctly political, revolutionary, protest art. Gross examines graffiti landscapes from Italy, Poland, Greece and the US analyzing and mapping meanings from Camorra infiltration in Naples; the fall of Communism in Gdansk; and the etchings of gang warfare in Chicago. The book is replete with photos of graffiti tableaus and colorscapes. Gross’ political analysis sees graffiti as a ubiquitous, rebellious form of art that arises out of marginalized communities and is accessed across classes, while maintaining a largely proletarian sentiment, all of which he explored and examined for us here at Third Mind Books when he gave a marvelous lecture about "Words of The Prophets" on October 20th, 2023. With this volume comes two CDs of music recorded by Gross titled “Graffiti Kings”. Signed in thin black ink at the title page beneath his name, the author has signed “For Lady Pink and Lee Quinones and the NYC artists. Jonathan Gross”. Hardcover with illustrated boards. Presumed first edition, first printing though not explicated as such at copyright page. Book is in very fine condition with only minor smudging to front and back covers. An extra handling fee will be added for shipping due to the weight of this item. Very Fine. [Item #5924]
