Original Concert Poster: Youngbloods, Siegel-Schwall Band (June 15-18, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing a "Dance Concert" series of performances headlined by the Youngbloods, along with the (Corky) Siegel-(Jim) Schwall Band (here referred to as Siegal(sic)-Schwall), during June 15-18, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Moscoso" in black-colored facsimile cursive handwriting is found just below the lower green image border near right corner. Credited for "Lights" is the "North American Ibis Alchemical Co(mpany)," a memorably-named incarnation of Roger Hillyard, Ben van Meter & their associates. Hillyard (b. 1942) was highly involved in the exemplary psychedelic light shows of this era, later became the proprietor of a popular coffee shop, & most recently the practicing resident of a Zen Buddhist center- all in San Francisco. Van Meter (b. 1941) was also a major light show producer & experimental filmmaker at this time, & still engages in cutting-edge creativity as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster, it is a first printing, especially distinguished by the absence of a series of lines described by King in his entry for the second printing (FD-66-RP-2, pg. 133): "When viewed at an oblique angle the upper left corner of the reprint seems to have five or six faint vertical red lines...separated by red lines of similar width that are very faintly different in color from the background red. These extend from the top edge to the green border of the image." (pg. 133) Our careful inspection of this area from various angles shows a solid red background. King, FD-66-OP-1, pg. 133. King writes at length about this poster which he entitles "Strongman," excerpted here: "The central image is an early 20th-century photograph of a strongman named Albert Treolar wearing only a bathing suit. He is flexing his arm muscle to show off his biceps. This portion of the image is from MacFadden's Encyclopedia of Physical Culture by Bernarr MacFadden. In front of the strongman is a woman lying down between an ottoman and a chair. The images of the woman are of separate origin collaged with the strongman by Victor Moscoso. There are two separate images of the woman, each a different color, so that if this poster is viewed through one blue lens and one red lens and the viewer alternates closing one eye and then the other, it produces the effect of the woman's head moving up and down. This is similar to the effect of the flapping wings and dancing of the woman in No. 61 (see our item No. 5746, "Annabelles Butterfly dance")...More than any of the other psychedelic poster artists (Moscoso) was able to employ an array of optical legerdemain which came very close to duplicating some of the visual effects of LSD, but his use of them went well beyond mere visual trickery because he was able to incorporate these unusual effects into the creation of beautiful art." (pg. 133) Indeed! A superb exemplar of the High (can't help it) Moscoso style at the very cusp of the "Summer of Love" in its rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), an acclaimed artist & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5916). In our sharp-eyed & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only a hint of wear & some tiny bumps, faint creases at edges & corners. The entire printed recto is completely bright & substantially mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5945]
