Original Concert Poster: Vanilla Fudge, Charles Lloyd Quartet (September 29- October 1, 1967)
San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing a series of concerts headlined by Vanilla Fudge, along with the Charles Lloyd Quartet, during September 29- October 1, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The acclaimed American poster & album cover artist Alton Kelley (1940-2008, known as "Kelley") created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Kelley!" in facsimile black upper case hand-writing is found just below the lower right black curved image border-corner (see image). We note that "Mouse Studio!" is stated within the border above & to the left of "Kelley!", just to the right of the female figure. Apparently this was a solo Kelley production within his capacity at Mouse Studios, headed by the noted American artist Stanley Mouse (b. Stanley George Miller, 1940), and as King only credits Kelley here, we presume this was not a collaboration as in most cases with this Family Dog poster series. Credited for "Lights" is "The North American Ibis Alchemical Co.," a memorably-named incarnation of Roger Hillyard, Ben van Meter & their associates. Hillyard (b, 1942) was highly involved with the exemplary psychedelic light shows of this era, later became the proprietor of a popular coffee shop, & most recently the practicing resident of a Zen Buddhist center- all in San Francisco. Van Meter (b. 1941) was also a major light show producer & experimental filmmaker at this time, & still engages in cutting-edge creativity as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster, it is a first printing, distinguished especially by the black (as opposed to green) lettering of the ticket outlets strip at lower white margin below lower black image border. King, FD-85-OP-1, pg. 151. King writes: The central image is a woman wearing a diaphanous gown. The woman in this photograph, Josephine Marcus, was the wife of Wyatt Earp, the famous Old West lawman who later worked in San Francisco as a newspaper reporter and lived well into the 20th-century. While many old photographs of nude women from this era show an aesthetic for beauty which is substantially different from that of the last half of the 20th-century, this photograph of Josephine Marcus has such a modern feeling to it that many people have mistaken it for a contemporary photograph." (pg. 151) We'll say! A wonderful example of the sensual-psychedelic Kelley style from the autumn immediately following the "Summer of Love" in its rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a venerable artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a legendary time & place. In our sharp-eyed & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only mild rubbing, browning & occasional short, faint creasing to mostly blank white outer border; a hint of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners- the entire bordered printed recto image appears completely bright & substantially mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #6026]
