The Red Notebook

The Red Notebook

Highlands, NC: Jonathan Williams/ Jargon Books, 1958. First Edition. Sofcover. "This notebook, called "The Red Notebook" because indited in a printer's dummy with a red cover, was probably begun during the course of the air-conditioned nightmare trip around America. I had begun the trip with a handsome large dummy (for Leaves of Grass) which I was obliged to sell before completing the trip. This one, I know, was completed in the Green House at Beverly Glen, where I had been given shelter by Gilbert and Margaret Neiman. It was finished by February 1944 when I left Beverly Glen to discover Big Sur." (Henry Miller, from front flap) According to Shifreen & Jackson, this is a "Facsimile edition of one of two notebooks which (Henry) Miller kept during his "Air-Conditioned Nightmare" tour across America in the early 1940s...," published exclusively in this edition of 2000 copies during 1958 (A110, pg. 312). Trade-format softcover in sewn binding with over-wraps affixed to covers & spine at flaps. With facsimile notebook pages of hand-writings, illustrations etc., some pages printed upside-down (presumably as they appeared in the manuscript notebook), an attractive production including reproduction of an untitled 1957 drawing by Miller on front over-wrap cover. A fascinating, important collectible in the vast oeuvre of Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artist whose earlier works were an influence & inspiration to the Beat Generation, in its singularly rarest contemporary form. In relatively near-fine-verging-on-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, scratching & fading to front, back covers & esp. spine; very light wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps; one very short, closed vertical tear from upper left edge of back cover at blank white band, not effecting 1954 image of Miller by Wynn Bullock (1902-1975, the noted American photographer); rubbing with loss of surface paper along left edge of same very slightly effecting image; light rubbing, a bit of browning & occasional spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only a hint of browning at/near edges of blank endpapers, page leaves. Near Fine- Fine. [Item #6070]
