Original Concert Poster: Bo Diddley, Lee Michaels (November 17-19, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing a series of three concerts headlined by Bo Diddley, along with Lee MIchaels, during November 17-19, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The American artist William Henry, of whom we could not obtain any information except the interesting fact that he was very young at the time (see King's commentary below), created the intricate artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "(symbol) WS. HENRY...67..." in deep-pink facsimile hand-lettering, numbering & illustration is found just outside outermost purple image border at lower right edge/corner (see image). According to the (particularly in this case) Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster, it is the second of three printings, with smooth- (as opposed to woven-lined) textured paper stock & the presence of "...an irregular fine line which surrounds the Family Dog Logo." We could not detect a tiny purple line-dot at lower right margin to the right of "7," which King indicates as a point on third printings (again, see magnified image for these points/absence). King, FD-92-RP-2, pg. 158. King writes: "The central image is a drawing of three women's faces. The one in the center faces the viewer, and the ones on either side of her are in profile facing outward. Their hair is very elaborately drawn, and they are wearing very elaborate earrings and necklaces. William Henry, the artist who created this poster, which was very well drawn and laid out, was in high school at the time he created this poster." (pg. 158) A strikingly beautiful & compelling exemplar of the psychedelic style from the later autumn following the "Summer of Love" in its penultimately rarest contemporary form. If you're still with us as of this writing & happen to read this curation, please let us know a little about your adult life since you created this stunning poster, Mr. Henry! From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), an acclaimed artiste & sculoptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a fabled time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5916). In our eagle-eyed & experienced estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only very light rubbing, a touch of browning & few tiny non-penetrative dimple-scratches (the latter mostly at lower right) to mostly blank white outermost margin/edges; a bit of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners- the entire printed recto image appears completely bright & substantially mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping charges will be required. Very Fine. [Item #6149]
