Berlin, Germany: Taschen, 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. Imogen Cunningham (1883–1976) was a legendary American photographer known particularly for her nudes, botanical compositions, and emerging industrial landscapes. A member of “Group f/64”, a group founded by seven 20th-century San Francisco Bay Area photographers who shared a common photographic style characterized by sharply focused and carefully framed images seen through a particularly Western (U.S.) viewpoint. In part, they formed in opposition to the pictorialist photographic style that had dominated much of the early 20th century, but moreover, they wanted to promote a new modernist aesthetic that was based on precisely exposed images of natural forms and found objects. Cunningham’s work not only embraced the group's sensibility, but her own work came to largely define the broader movement. Imogen Cunningham, the volume of today’s curation, is a lovingly selected compilation of Cunningham's greatest works. The volume is also filled with critical/analytical essays from Richard Lorenz, a writer who has written extensively on Cunningham since 1983 and has curated various museums across the world, and Edward Weston, Cunningham's contemporary and fellow member of Group f/64, who published many of his own Daybooks exploring his own artistic evolution alongside those like Cunningham. A beautiful volume that displays and unravels the genius behind Cunningham’s work! From the collection of Dr. Stanley Hurwick Levy (1926-2020), an American physician who met & conferred with Albert Einstein while a student prodigy at Princeton University during the 1940s, & was one of the most legendarily prolific & important book collectors of them all, over many years.
