London, England, UK: Scala Books, 1990. First Edition. Large-Format Softcover. “The Wallace Collection was bequeathed to the British nation by Lady Wallace in 1897, and was opened to the public as a national museum three years later. Lady Wallace was the widow of Sir Richard Wallace, the illegitimate son of Richard Seymour-Conway, fourth Marquess of Hertford, and the Collection had been accumulated principally by successive Marquesses of Hertford, though their contributions were unequal. According to the Founder’s Deed of Trust, the Wallace collection is ‘kept together, unmixed with other objects of art’, which means that nothing may be added to it, nor any loan be made or received.” British art historian and writer John Ingamells (1934-2013) was the director of the Wallace Collection from 1978 to 1992. The catalog presented here was his primary objective in his first years as director after assisting the previous director for a year. The entire collection resides in the former townhouse of the Seymour family (Marquesses of Hertford) in London’s Manchester Square as a free public museum comparable to the Louvre and the Palace of Versailles. The collection includes invaluable paintings from the likes of Velasquez and Rembrandt, bronze statues, steel armor and weaponry, ceramics, porcelain, glass, and antique furniture on display throughout the 25 galleries. Many pieces came from France near the end of the revolutionary era, and the entire collection came together over 5 generations. Though the introduction states that no loans or addition may be made, temporary loans were permitted with the collection starting in 2019. Ingamells’ catalog provides a thorough overview of the history of the collection as well as 125 pages of color photographs with descriptions. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum, world travelers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art and books, and the dearly beloved late parents of our esteemed founder, Arthur S.
