Poems Made of Skin
Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Weed/flower Press, 1968. Limited First Edition. Staplebound. “I want you to see it. The stride / into darkness; dark / the lawn, strewn / with statues, a la boboli, / the ineffectual spar / and catch their palms widely or cup / them into fists. / Women are all negro / their inner selves. / Restraint cannot work; a cap / or straw boater means violence / in a man of summer.” ("Service" pg. 34) A collection of Carol Bergé's (1928-2006) poems, most—if not all—appearing in other journals and publications such as: Beatitude/East Camels Coming, Notes From Underground, Seventh Street Anthology, Yowl, and the book Four Young Lady Poets, (1962) among others. The cover features ‘Portrait of Carol Bergé” by D.A Levy (1942-1968) which might invite conversation of what qualifies as a “portrait” but makes a very provocative and attractive cover art fitting for Bergé’s work. Bergé was a significant figure in the literary ferment of Lower East Side NYC and was a contemporary and associate of Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, and others of our beloved Beat Generation. From the collection of Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary & co-founder (with John Sinclair) of the Detroit Artists’ Workshop. Softcover Original in stapled wrappers: Limited First Edition, one of 300 copies, as stated on colophon. Book is in Very Fine condition with standard yellowing from age and miniscule creasing on front corners. Very Fine. [Item #6264]
