Original Concert Poster: Genesis, Siegel-Schwall Band, Mother earth (January 19-21, 1968)
San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1968. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 21") announcing a series of three concerts headlined by Genesis (the lesser-known California-based hard rock band, not the English progressive rock band), along with the (Corky) Siegel- (Jim) Schwall Band & Mother Earth, during January 19-21, 1968 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. This was one of the few shows Genesis performed at before they disbanded in 1969. The artwork & graphics reproduced here were created by Robert Fried (1937-1975), among the great American San Francisco-based artists along with Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso (who were his friends & colleagues) et al.; & "Fried 68" in facsimile green cursive hand-lettering & numbering is found just below outermost blue image border near lower right corner at black background (see image). According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster, it is a first-&-only printing. King, FD-102-OP-1, pg. 167. King writes: "The central image is a woman sitting in an old-fashioned rocking chair. Behind her is a wall with a ladder resting against it. There is a window in the wall, and the Native American from the Family Dog logo is standing in the window. He is saying, "My Card Mam (sic)," and offering her a joint. There is also a small hang glider flying across the room. As is typical of most Bob Fried posters the background is made up of regularly spaced geometric designs, in this case small ovals." (pg. 167) King has entitled this poster "Rocking Chair." A dazzling, humorous exemplar of the mature (if that's the right word...) Fried psychedelic collage-illustration style from early in the year following that of the "Summer of Love," in its singularly rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a Highly (wink) regarded artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5916). In our sharp-eyed (if a bit dizzied) & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively quite very fine condition with only a touch of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners esp. at/from lower right corner; several tiny instances of loss of blank black surface at/nearest lower right edge. The entire printed recto image appears completely bright & substantially mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #6287]
