This newest issue of Beat Scene highlights “The Burroughs Affair 1963” (pg. 24), an excerpted report by John Pearson from the Sunday Times in February of 1963 in which the reporter visits William S. Burroughs at the Beat Hotel in Paris after his appearance at the Edinburgh Writers’ Conference. Additionally included in this issue are a review of Grove Press’s 1963 edition of Naked Lunch by Alex Neish originally published in The Outsider and a review by Pauline Reeves of Iain Sinclair’s The Frisco Kid: He Never Returns about a piece of WSB’s unpublished writing from his time in Tangier. (Tangerine Press, 2023)(see our item #6082) Jack Kerouac is heavily featured in this issue: editor Kevin Ring interviews Kerouac’s biographer Ann Charters about her involvement in City Lights’ publication of his Scattered Poems in 1971; an old correspondent of Kerouac’s, Jane Cryan, discusses their relationship with Ring after he found out she offered the letters to the Beat Museum; Ring also interviews Paul Maher Jr. in reference to his new biography Becoming Kerouac: A Writer in His Time (Lyons Press, 2023) and includes an excerpt; and a review of On the Road by novelist Nelson Algren from a 1957 issue of the Chicago Sun-Times. Additionally, Jim Burns shares an obituary of Herbert Gold (1924-2023), author of The Man Who Was Not With It (1956), and provides an editorial on pulp fiction.
