New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1994. First Edition. Hardcover. “One day in the late Summer of 1989, I had lunch in Telluride, Colorado, with the celebrated French director Bertrand Blier. Over steaks and salads, Blier told me funny stories about growing up in a theatrical family in Paris and about making movies with many of the finest actors in France. After coffee, we strolled back to Blier’s guest chalet and settled ourselves out on a veranda surrounded by the snowcapped peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The sun was warm, the air smelled of pine, and now I pulled out my notebook and edged Blier toward the heart of what I wanted to know. ‘So,’ I said. ‘Depardieu’ ‘Ahhh, Gerard,’ Blier said with a bemused air. ‘Now there’s a story.’ Blier pulled a pouch of Gauloise tobacco from his pocket and carefully refilled his pipe. I could see he was not quite sure where to begin. Finally, he struck a match and drew the flame down into the bowl. ‘Did you ever meet Gerard in Paris?’ ‘No,’ I said. ‘Strangely enough.’ ‘Pity,’ Blier said. ‘He’s extraordinary. A true phenomenon. Probably unique in the world.’ ‘Yes, I can imagine.’ ‘Oh, no, you cannot,’ Blier laughed. ‘No one can imagine it. With Gerard, you have to see it to believe it.’” (pg.1) Gerard Depardieu (b. 1948) is a French actor, and generally, one of the most prolific actors of all time. Starring in over 250 films, almost exclusively as the lead, Depardieu has an oeuvre that almost beggars belief: The Woman Next Door (1981), Thank You Life (1991), 1492: Conquest For Paradise (1992), Alas For Me (1993), and How Much Do You Love Me? (2005) just to name a few. Needless to say, Depardieu is an actor who, if one is a film connoisseur, is instantly recognizable and whose importance in film history cannot be understated. Depardieu, the volume offered here today, is a stunningly detailed and intimate biography of the legendary French actor. Written by author and former foreign correspondent Paul Chutkow, Depardieu is a comprehensive look into the life of the man behind the iconic actor.
