The World of Sex

New York, NY, USA: Grove Press, 1965. Third American Edition. Softcover. “This remarkable book—Henry Miller’s speculations on sex—treats its subject with the candor which readers have come to associate with all of Miller’s writings. It attacks the obsessive American preoccupation with acceptable snide smut, in favor of an open reverence for the sex life.” (from publisher’s blurb, pg. 1) Here we offer a legendary essay-thesis-memoir by Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great & prolific American writer whose earlier works were an influential precedent for the Beat Generation, especially Founding Father Jack Kerouac. Originally published in 1941, Miller restricted its distribution for fear of offending his ex-wife, so each printing varied slightly as the publisher bound them in small quantities. By the third edition, Olympia Press picked it up as part of the Traveller’s Companion Series. The text went through the editing process at Olympia and was republished without errors or an errata slip in 1959 as the fifth edition. Grove Press then adapted that version into this “FIRST AMERICAN PUBLICATION,” as stated on cover: “COMPLETE / PARIS EDITION / NOW PUBLISHED / BY / GROVE PRESS.” Though it was previously published in the U.S. by a small press, this is the first widely distributed American edition with a fully corrected and uncensored text. No explanation is provided as to why Miller suddenly allowed distribution, but I suppose time heals all wounds. Mass Market Paperback: Third American Edition, with all points from Shifreen & Jackson (A25v, pg. 130), first printing, as stated on copyright page. Book is in Near Fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing to front cover with a scuff over the word “FIRST” near the top edge and slight color fading to the green box housing the title; mild scratching to both covers; and mild browning from age to pages and along the outside edges of covers. Near Fine. [Item #6338]
