Nomad/ New York No. 10/11 (Autumn, 1962)
London, England, UK: Villiers Publications Ltd., 1962. First Printing. Softcover. "The editors of NOMAD are pleased to present materials from the poets of the New York avant-garde. The erosion of history is everywhere evident yet New York continues to maintain the richest of literary environments: it is our hope that the poets of the present issue will illustrate this conclusion." (from introductory statement by co-editor Anthony Linick, pg. 4) This number of the short-lived but highly significant & influential literary journal edited by Anthony Linick (b. 1938, the noted American author & academician) & Donald Factor (a son of the cosmetics magnate Max Factor Jr.) famously features a cornucopia of the foremost poets of the Beat Generation, New York & other Schools who were denizens of NYC when these movements were flourishing. With contributions by John Ashbery, Bill Berkson, Paul Blackburn, Gregory Corso, Diane di Prima, Kenward Elmslie, Allen Ginsberg (who contributes a prose essay, "Abstraction in Poetry," pgs. 50-51; Morgan, C162, pg. 235), LeRoi Jones (pre-Amiri Baraka), Robert Kelly, Denise Levertov, Jackson Mac Low, Frank O'Hara, Jerome Rothenberg, Diane Wakoski & many more. Also includes a portfolio section with reproductions of artworks by Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg & other contemporary NYC-residing artists whose works visually complimented the daring avant-garde poets. Trade-format softcover in sewn binding, presumed first-&-only printing published in London but apparently edited/headquartered in the area of Los Angeles. From the collection of Kevin Ring, publisher-editor of, & contributor to, Beat Scene magazine & other indispensable productions (many available here), & our good friend in the UK. Among the very richest gatherings of primary Beat-&-Beyond poets between two covers that we have encountered; a most-collectible & very rare relic of a time & place of roiling creativity waxing, waning, morphing & intersecting- NYC 1962. With distinguished provenance to boot. In relatively quite near-fine-verging-on-fine condition with mild rubbing, faint scratching, a touch of browning & occasional spotting to front, back covers & spine; slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; series of faint creases along length of spine; mild rubbing, browning & occasional spotting to edges of text block.
