National Gallery of Art, Washington (New & Revised Edition)
New York, NY, USA: Harry N. Abrams, 1984. Second Edition. Large-Format Hardcover. “The National Gallery of Art in our nation’s capital is the greatest treasure house of Western art in the United States. This sumptuous volume—a publishing landmark—is the first book devoted to a museum ever to reproduce so many works of art in full color. Now, this new and revised edition includes masterpieces acquired over the last decade, among them splendid examples of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French and American painting from the collections of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon and John Hay Whitney.” (from front flap) The original edition of this work was published in 1975, and the acquisitions made in that decade were enough to make it almost obsolete. Director Emeritus John Walker (1906-1995), whose term ended in 1969, took on the revisions with the help of the then-current director J. Carter Brown (1934-2002). Brown is credited with growing and promoting the museum into what it is today, and he was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1991 for his service. This tome offers a brief history and description of the museum and its grounds, then there are thirteen sections broken up by region, medium, and era as far back as the thirteenth century. Since this publication, a further updated edition has not been released, so this is the most thorough representation of the collection with over 1,000 photos and illustrations.
